초저온에서 전기 저항이 없어져 전류가 장애 없이 흐르는 초전도 현상. [사진 미국 에너지부] 국내 연구진이 발표한 상온·상압 초전도체 신물질 ‘LK-99’를 두고 국내외 학계·산업계 등에서 논란이 가열되고 있다. 3일 한국초전도저온학회 검증위원회는 전날 ‘LK-99’를 상온 초전도체가 아니라고 결론 내린 이유에 대해 “초전도체의 특징인 ‘마이스너 효과’(초전도체가 자기장을 밀어내는 효과)를 보이지 않았기 때문”이라고 입장을 밝혔다. 학회 측은 LK-99를 개발한 퀀텀에너지연구소에 샘플을 요청했지만 ‘투고한 논문이 심사 중이라 심사가 끝나는 2~4주 후 받을 수 있다’는 답변을 받았다고 한다. 특히 이 연구 과제가 2019년 교육부의 ‘창의도전연구 기반사업’에 선정(‘새로운 초전도 물질 개발을 위한 저자기장 영역 마이크로파 흡수에 관한 연구’)돼 연구비를 지원받았던 만큼 정부도 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다. 연구 부정 등이 드러날 경우 연구비 환수 가능성이 있어서다. 퀀텀에너지연구소는 이날 운영 중이던 홈페이지를 일시 폐쇄했다. 앞서 홈페이지에 연구·협력 파트너로 소개돼 있던 삼성SDI·LG이노텍·포스코 등이 퀀텀에너지연구소와 연관성을 부인하면서 무단 도용 의혹이 일기도 했다. 외신은 이날도 LK-99 개발 소식을 비중 있게 다뤘다. 블룸버그통신은 “LK-99는 한 세대에 한 번 나올법한 과학적 돌파구일 수도 있지만 큰 실망에 그칠지도 모른다”고 보도했다. 인도 국립물리연구소와 중국 베이징항공항천대학 연구진은 전날 “LK-99가 상온·상압 초전도체가 아니다”는 실험 결과를 내놨다. “재료에서 실온 초전도의 증거를 찾지 못했다. 물질이 공중에 뜨지 않았다”는 이유에서다. 다만 미국 에너지부 산하 로런스버클리 국립연구소(LBLN) 소속 연구진은 “컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과 LK-99에서 초전도체 특성이 감지됐다”는 내용의 출판 전 논문을 공유하며 “하지만 실제 합성에는 어려움이 있을 수 있다”고 밝힌 바 있다. 초전도체란? ◦ 일정 온도 이하에서 전기 저항이 0이 되는 물질 ◦ 1911년 네덜란드 물리학자 카메를링 오네스가 수은이 섭씨 영하 269도 근처에서 전기저항이 사라지는 초전도 현상 관찰 ▶ 1913년 노벨 물리학상 수상 ◦ 이후 연구된 초전도체는 극저온이나 초고압 조건에서 초전도 현상 구현 ◦ 최근 한국 연구진, 일상 환경인 상온·상압에서 초전도체 ‘LK-99’를 만들었다고 주장 LK-99 연구에 참여한 김현탁 미국 윌리엄앤드메리대 연구교수는 이날 언론 인터뷰에서 “LK-99의 반자성 데이터가 흑연(그래파이트)보다 훨씬 크게 나온다”며 “초전도 현상으로밖에 설명이 되지 않는다”고 주장했다.
