의료기술의 발달은 우리의 기대수명을 높이고 있다. 통계청에 따르면 2023년 기준 국민연금 수급이 시작되는 65세 이상 인구는 약 950만명으로 전체 인구의 18.4%를 차지한다. 1990년 65세 이상 인구가 약 220만명(전체 인구 대비 5.1%)이었던 것과 비교할 때 기대수명이 빠르게 증가하고 있다는 것을 더욱 실감할 수 있다. 이런 추세가 지속될 경우 2050년에 65세 이상 인구는 1900만명으로 전체인구의 40.1%를 차지하게 된다. 절반에 가까운 인구가 65세 이상이 된다는 것이다.기대수명의 증가는 축배를 들 일이지만, 동시에 나타난 출산율의 감소는 우리에게 마냥 긍정적이지 못한 앞날을 예고하고 있다. 통계청에 따르면 2021년 기준 가임 여성 1인당 출산율은 0.808명으로, 2명의 부부가 결혼해 1명 이하의 출산을 하고 있다고 한다. 은퇴한 고령 인구는 증가하는 반면 미래에 일할 수 있는 인구가 줄어들고 있는 것이다. 이런 추세의 영향은 국민연금에 가장 먼저 나타나고 있는 것 같다. 제5차 국민연금 재정계산 결과 국민연금의 소진시기가 2055년으로 나타났다. 이는 4차 때 발표된 2057년보다 2년이나 앞당겨진 것이다.늘어나는 기대수명으로 국민연금만으로는 노후를 보장받기 어렵다는 사실에, 최근 사적연금의 중요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 정부도 이에 맞춰 연금저축의 세액공제 한도를 기존 연간 400만원에서 600만원으로 증대하며 사적연금 가입을 독려하고 있다. 그러나 사적연금에 대한 아쉬움도 있다. 납입하는 보험료에 비해 수령하는 연금액이 생각만큼 많지 않다는 것이다.연금은 기본적으로 우리가 납입하는 보험료에 이자를 부리하고(연금기준금액), 쌓인 돈을 매년 지급(연금 지급률)하는 구조로 돼있다. 연금을 많이 받기 위해서는 납입하는 돈뿐만 아니라, 오랜 기간 쌓아온 이자가 뒷받침돼야 하는 것이다. 그러니 노후준비의 필요성을 느끼게 되는 퇴직 직전의 연령에는 많은 금액을 가입해도, 거치기간이 짧아 높은 연금액을 지급받지 못한다.

박창식 KDB생명 과장현재 시중에 인기를 끌고 있는 확정금리형 변액연금을 기준으로 동일한 금액을 10년 간 납입한다고 가정했을 때, 65세 연금 개시 시 10세에 가입할 경우 50세에 가입하는 경우보다 약 3배의 연금액을 더 수령할 수 있다.
