더스쿠프 마켓톡톡위기 속 더 단단해진 달러미 증시 떠받친 재정지출 풍부한 여유자금도 한몫 신용등급 복귀 쉽지 않아 미, 장기적 안정은 의문신용평가회사 피치가 미국의 신용등급을 강등했지만, 그 여파가 크지 않다. 미국 경제계 주요 인사들은 피치의 신용등급 강등을 무시하거나 오히려 비난하고 있다. 미국 금융시장이 신용등급 하락에도 큰 영향을 받지 않는 이유는 무엇일까.

[사진=뉴시스]제이미 다이먼 JP모건 CEO는 미국 신용등급이 강등된 지난 2일 경제 매체 CNBC와 인터뷰에서 "(미국의 강등은) 우스꽝스러운 일"이라며 "미국과 미군이 만들어준 안정성에 의지하는 나라들의 신용등급이 우리보다 높다(they depend on the stability created by the U.S. and its military)"고 말했다. 피치가 미국보다 높은 신용등급을 부여한 나라는 호주‧덴마크‧독일‧룩셈부르크‧네덜란드‧스위스‧노르웨이‧스웨덴‧싱가포르 9개국이다. 재닛 옐런 재무장관도 같은 날 "피치의 결정이 우리가 이미 알고 있는 사실을 바꿀 수 없을 것"이라며 "미국 국채는 세계에서 가장 특출나게 안전한 자산"이라고 말했다. 워런 버핏은 3일 CNBC와 인터뷰에서 "버크셔 해서웨이는 지난주 월요일, 이번주 월요일에 미국 국채 100억 달러어치를 샀다"며 "다음주에도 우리는 100억 달러로 미국 국채 3개월물을 살지 아니면 6개월물을 살지만 걱정한다"고 말했다. 버핏은 그 이유가 "누구나 알듯 달러가 세계 기축통화이기 때문"이라고 설명했다. 이들의 말은 사실일까. 신용등급 강등의 여파가 미국 국채시장과 주식시장에 큰 영향을 주지 않았다는 점에서 이들의 주장은 결과적으로는 사실이다. 하지만, 피치가 지적한 재정악화, 정부부채 증가, 정치적 해결 능력의 약화라는 문제는 미국도 언젠가는 마주해야 할 심각한 이슈다. 미국이기 때문에 당장 문제가 없어 보이는 것뿐이다. 신용등급 강등은 일반적으로 한 나라의 경제적 흥망을 결정할 수도 있는 대형 이슈다.
