코로나19 확진자가 하루 평균 4만명대를 넘어가면서 여름철 재유행에 대한 우려가 번지고 있다. 코로나 확진자 대부분은 인후통과 발열 등의 증상을 겪지만, 감염자 중 약 20%는 본인이 코로나에 걸렸다는 사실조차 인식하지 못한다. 일명 ‘무증상 감염자’다.최근 국제학술지 네이처에는 코로나 무증상 확률을 최대 8배까지 높여주는 변이 유전자가 있다는 연구 결과가 발표됐다.미국 샌프란시스코 캘리포니아대(USCF) 질 홀렌바흐 박사가 이끄는 연구팀은 무증상 감염자를 찾아내기 위해 골수 기증자의 데이터베이스를 활용해 약 3만명의 참가자를 등록했다.이 참가자들은 15개월의 연구기간동안 코로나 양성 판정 여부와 감염증상에 관련된 내용을 연구진에게 보고했다.참가자들의 보고를 종합한 결과 연구기간 동안 코로나에 감염된 참가자는 1428명이었고 이 중 136명이 무증상이었다.연구진은 연구 참가자들의 유전자를 분석하는 과정에서 무증상 감염자들에게 HLA 유전자 변형이 일어나있다는 사실을 찾아냈다. HLA는 인체에 문제를 일으킬 수 있는 잠재적인 침입자의 펩타이드 조각을 면역계에 보여주고, 면역반응을 일으키는 T 세포가 침입자에게 대항하도록 하는 역할을 한다.참가자들 중 특정 HLA 변이 유전자를 가지고 있는 사람은 코로나에 걸려도 무증상일 확률이 다른 사람들 보다 두배 이상 높았다. 특히 변이 유전자를 양쪽 부모로부터 물려받아 두 개를 보유한 경우에는 무증상의 확률이 8배나 높았다.연구팀은 HLA 변이 유전자가 어떻게 코로나 무증상 감염자를 만드는지 알아내기 위해 한 번도 코로나에 노출된 적 없는 사람들을 대상으로 HLA 변이 유전자를 분석했다. 그 결과 이들이 가진 HLA 변이는 코로나에 대한 기억이 없지만 코로나에 빠르게 대응할 수 있다는 것을 알아냈다.연구진은 이를 토대로 “특정 HLA 변이체가 코로나19 바이러스의 스파이크 단백질 조각을 일반 계절성 코로나 바이러스의 스파이크 단백질 조각과 더 비슷하게 인식하게끔 해 더욱 강력한 항바이러스 반응을 촉발한다”는 가설을 제시했다.
