신창재 교보생명 대표이사 겸 이사회 의장이 7일 광화문 교보생명 본사에서 열린 '창립 65주년 기념식'에서 기념사를 하고 있다. /교보생명 제공 “지방의 한 상담센터에선 직원들이 영어 이름을 카스, 테라, 켈리 등 귀에 익숙한 맥주의 이름으로 정했다고 한다. 물론 지금은 평범한 영어 이름으로 바꿨지만, 갑작스러운 변화에 다들 혼란이 많은 것 같다. 연차가 높은 직원 가운데 자신의 한글 이름을 그냥 영문자로 바꿔 제출한 사람도 있다고 한다.”교보생명 임직원들이 때 아닌 작명(作名) 고민에 빠졌다. 창립 65주년을 맞은 교보생명이 수평적이고 유연한 조직문화를 정착시키기 위해 직급을 없애고 영어 이름을 사용하기로 했기 때문이다.9일 금융권에 따르면 교보생명은 지난 7일 65주년 창립기념일에 맞춰 직원 간 호칭에 영어 이름을 사용하는 제도를 시행하기로 했다. 이미 일부 부서에서는 지난해부터 시범적으로 영어 이름을 사용하고 있었는데, 모든 임직원으로 대상을 확대한 것이다. 교보생명은 생명보험업계에서도 특히 보수적인 조직 문화를 가진 곳이라, 이 같은 시도가 파격적이라는 평가가 많다.교보생명의 영어 이름 도입은 신 대표의 강한 의지가 반영된 것으로 알려졌다. 그는 고령화와 새 보험 국제회계기준(IFRS17)·지급여력제도(K-ICS) 시행, 빅테크의 보험시장 진출 등으로 보험사업 전반에 큰 변화가 일어나고 있다고 봤다. ‘회색 코뿔소(지속적인 경고로 충분히 예상할 수 있지만 쉽게 간과하는 위험 요인)’에 대응하기 위해선 과감한 혁신이 필요한데, 이를 위해선 수평적이고 유연한 조직문화가 정착해야 한다는 것이다.최근 많은 국내 대기업들이나 스타트업이 미국 실리콘밸리의 정보기술(IT) 기업들처럼 자유롭고 창의적인 문화를 만들기 위해 직급 대신 영어 이름을 사용하고 있는 것과 같은 맥락이다.신 대표의 뜻에 따라 교보생명의 모든 임직원은 앞으로 회의와 업무 시 직급 대신 영어 이름을 사용해야 한다.
