호주 액화천연가스(LNG) 플랜트 노동자들이 파업에 나설 것이라는 우려가 호주산 LNG 수입이 거의 없는 유럽의 LNG 가격을 9일(현지시간) 40% 가까이 끌어올렸다. 독일 LNG 운반선 '넵튠'호가 1월 14일 취역해 루브민항에 정박해 있다. 로이터뉴스1 유럽 천연가스 가격이 9일(이하 현지시간) 40% 가까이 폭등했다. 호주 액화천연가스(LNG) 공급 차질 우려가 가스 가격 폭등을 불렀다. 파이낸셜타임스(FT)에 따르면 유럽 가스 가격 기준물인 타이틀트랜스퍼퍼실러티(TTF) 가격이 이날 메가와트시(MWh)당 43유로(약 6만2100원)로 뛰었다. 전날 30유로 수준에 비해 40% 가까이 폭등했다. TTF 가격은 6월 중순 이후 최고치를 찍었다. 이날 가격 폭등은 호주 LNG 수출 차질 우려에서 비롯됐다. 호주 LNG 플랜트 노동자들이 임금 인상과 직업 안정성을 요구하며 파업에 나설 계획이란 소식이 공급차질 우려로 이어지면서 가격이 폭등했다. 설상가상으로 공매도 압박까지 더해져 가격 상승폭이 더 컸다. 그동안 가스 가격 하락에 베팅했던 공매도 투자자들이 가격 상승 여파로 서둘러 공매도를 마감하기 위한 매수에 나서면서 LNG 가격 상승세가 더 가팔라졌다. 유럽연합(EU)내 가스 비축규모가 저장 한계에 육박할 정도로 높은 수준을 유지하고 있음에도 불구하고 공급 차질 우려에 가스 가격이 폭등한 것은 유럽의 에너지 위기가 2년째 사라지지 않았다는 뜻이기도 하다. 유럽의 에너지 위기 심리가 여전하다는 것은 유럽에 호주산 LNG가 들어오는 것이 아니라는 점으로도 충분히 알 수 있다. 우크라이나 전쟁 이후 유럽이 러시아산 천연가스 의존도를 낮추고 해상으로 운반되는 LNG 비중을 점차 확대하고 있지만 호주 LNG가 직접 유럽에 수출되는 경우는 매우 드물다. 호주 LNG 수출 차질에 따른 국제시장의 LNG 가격 상승 우려가 이날 유럽 LNG 가격 폭등을 불렀다. 비록 러시아가 유럽 가스관을 잠갔던 지난해 여름의 사상최고 가격인 MWh 당 340유로 가격에 비해서는 크게 낮기는 하지만 유럽 LNG 가격이 폭등했다는 것은 공급 차질 우려에 시장이 매우 취약한 상황이라는 점을 보여준다.
