97세대(1990년대 학번, 1970년대 출생)는 현재 문재인 정부와 민주당의 가장 강력한 지지집단이다. 올해 4·15총선에서 40대 중 64.5%가 민주당 후보를 지지했다(방송3사 출구조사). 11월 현재도 문재인 대통령 국정수행 지지율을 비롯한 각종 여론조사에서 민주당에 대한 40대의 호의적 태도는 일관된 경향이다.
세대를 대표할 정치집단 부재
97세대의 문재인 정부 지지 경향은 우선 자기 세대를 대표할 수 있는 정치집단의 부재에 있다. 한국의 정당은 좌우를 막론하고 후속 세대를 길러내는 기능이 매우 취약하다. 대신 학생운동이 정치인 인큐베이팅 기능을 수행했다. 1970년대 민청학련과 1980년대 전대협이 대표 사례다. 반면 1990년대 한총련으로 대표되는 학생운동은 달랐다.
1990년대 학생운동은 민주화 이후 직선제 도입, 소련 및 동구권 사회주의 몰락, 북한의 경제난 등을 목도하면서도 새로운 운동으로 재탄생하지 못했다. 대중을 설득하지 못한 운동은 자기 존재를 증명하기 위해 급진적 투쟁으로 경도됐다. 1991년 이른바 분신(焚身)정국과 정원식 국무총리 밀가루 테러 사건, 1996년 연세대 사태, 1997년 전남대와 한양대에서 일어난 프락치 오인 폭행 사건 등은 대중의 반감을 자극했다. 고립을 극복하기 위한 극단적 행위가 다시 고립을 불러오는 악순환에 빠진 것이다.
